Rabin Cone Contrast Test (RCCT)

The Rabin Cone Contrast Test (RCCT) is a specialized color vision test used to evaluate red, green, and blue color discrimination. At Ellis Eye Optometry, we offer the Rabin Cone Contrast Test for individuals who need this specific form of color vision testing, including those seeking testing for aviation and military requirements.

The Air Force, Army, Navy, and Coast Guard version of the RCCT is FAA-approved for pilot medical certification for Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 medical certificates. Because this is a specialized test that must be administered in person, we have patients who travel from outside the area specifically to complete their RCCT.

Key RCCT Testing Requirements

Depending on the applicable testing protocol, the RCCT may require:

• Passing Score: A score of 55 or higher for each required cone type/color, with testing performed monocularly.
• Testing Setup: The test is administered in person at approximately 3 feet from a calibrated digital device.
• In-Person Testing: Online color vision tests are not accepted for FAA certification. The RCCT must be administered using the appropriate testing equipment.
• Color-Correction Restrictions: Color-correcting lenses and blue filters should not be used during testing.
• Retakes: Up to three attempts may be permitted, with the best qualifying result reported, depending on the applicable protocol.
• Documentation: An official computer-generated report can be provided for submission with the appropriate FAA/AMCS medical certification documentation.
